Cafe Du Nord is located in the basement of the Swedish American Building on upper Market Street in San Francisco. Built in 1907, this former speakeasy and Scandinavian and Basque restaurant was reopened in 1991 as a bar/nightclub and restaurant.
Jazz is the main theme for the entertainment and has put Cafe Du Nord on the forefront of the Jazz renaissance that has steadily grown in San Francisco over the past five years. The club's line-up varies from night to night; straight jazz, be-bop, acid jazz, big band, vintage blues, lounge and salsa are all featured along with strong support for smaller cabaret acts, poetry readings, and other specialized shows. Cafe Du Nord prides itself for providing quality food, drinks and entertainment at an affordable price.
Dinner is served Wednesday-Saturday evenings from 6:30pm to 11:00pm, and reservations are recommended. Cafe Du Nord offers an American-styled menu with a Mediterranean twist. Soups and pasta change daily, while the Filet Mignon with shallot butter and garlic mashed potatoes and the Grilled Albacore Tuna with chipolte aioli, rice and vegetables remain big favorites on the menu. For vegetarians there are numerous choices including the Crispy Polenta appetizer and the Wild Mushroom Strudel accompanied with an exceptional Madeira sauce. Cafe Du Nord has a full bar, nine beers on draft, specializing in American micro-breweries, and a lovingly selected collection of California wines by the glass and bottle.
The five year old Caffe Delle Stelle has been such a huge success, the owners decided to open several other restaurants around the Bay Area. The San Francisco location offers an up beat, rustic ambiance and inexpensive Tuscan specialties that have attracted a large local following.
The airy dinning room at Caffe Delle Stelle displays tall stacks of tomato cans, olive oils, pasta boxes and Chianti cases which act as both decoration and room dividers. Dinner gets off to a filling start with freshly baked Italian bread and herb spread. Pitchers of Italian mineral water are thoughtfully placed on each table. Start with the delicious Gamberoni, which is marinated shrimps served over a bed of beans & a basil spread. You can choose from their many different pasta dishes, but a favorite among regulars is the pastas in perfect wild mushroom and tomato sauce tossed with fresh peas.
Other dishes include a half grilled chicken: caramelized garlic- rosemary, with a balsamic marinade; toasted salmon filet: arugola, tomatoes, in a lemon- olive oil sauce; or grilled leg of lamb skewer: mascarpone, oregano, lemon sauce. While you are there don't forget to try the Tiramisu for dessert, they will even give you two forks to share it with that special someone. Make a reservation today, and let their courteous staff serve you up a delicious meal that doesn't cost a fortune!

Magically, Johnny Rockets--home of the Original Hamburger, captures a time when the corner malt shop was the friendliest place in town. It was an era that began when the Allies had just won the war and America was full of optimism and hope. It was also a time when couples would sit at the fountain, share a Coke, and listen to Nat King Cole. It continued through the fun of the 50's -- and it's still alive in the 90's -- at Johnny Rockets.
Founder Ronn Teitelbaum explains: "I'm a product of the '40's. I dreamed of bringing back the authentic malt shop that I remember as a kid. And I wanted to make the best hamburger in the world." With more than 80 restaurants worldwide, including six Johnny Rockets in northern California, located in San Francisco, Concord, San Jose, Milpitas and the newest in Redwood City, Teitelbaum has successfully made his dream come true.
In San Francisco, check out a menu of real American classics at Johnny Rockets, 2201 Chestnut (cross street Pierce, (415)931-6258); 1946 Fillmore (cross street Pine, (415) 776-9878); or 81 Jefferson @ Pier 39 in Fisherman's Wharf. Other sandwich favorites are grilled cheese, BLT's, tuna and egg salad. All can be complemented with orders of chili fries, hand-dipped ice cream shakes, malts and floats. And, please don't forget dessert -- especially when it's freshly-baked apple pie--just like the kind Mom used to make. Most Johnny Rocket locations are open daily from 10 a.m. Check individual locations for specific times.

L'Olivier, a French restaurant successfully in business 18 years, is now entering the 1990's with a fresh, clean direction, offering a refined balance of the old-style classical French cuisine and a more contemporary, lighter, yet elegant faire. Proprietors Guy and Christian Francoz have achieved a most sensitive transition, both in cuisine and service - old and new blended exquisitely.
L'Olivier cuisine has maintained their classical heritage while adapting to the needs of today's sophisticated customers. Sauces made from fresh, flavorful stocks or vegetable coulis and herbs are low in butter and cream. Meat and fish dishes are frequently grilled or steamed. A Lobster Salad with Mango in a delicate fresh ginger dressing is a perfect example of this light, elegant style.
"One of the best French buys in town", says Patricia Unterman of The San Francisco Chronicle. "A soothing place to eat and talk, invisible service, and dependably good French food", says Caroline Bates of Gourmet Magazine. At a time when trends come and go, L'Olivier presents a solid alternative for people who want to be made to feel "special" in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. At L'Olivier, guests are well taken care of by discriminating hosts who remember their names and preferences. Never rushed through lunch or dinner, guests may linger as long as they wish.
