The compact Cafe India, surrounded by Italian-style restaurants, presents a menu that covers the whole range of Indian cooking. Chutneys is an elegant, sophisticated Indian restaurant where the complex food is accompanied by friendly, nearly doting service. Curries are a must, and you can specify the heat level when you order. Tandoori chicken is red and moist, and don't pass up the naan, classic Indian flatbread. Use the warm rounds to soak up the last bit of savory sauce.--Diablo

VIK's Chaat Corner

726 Allston Way., Berkeley     MapIt!
(510) 644-4412
$/L /W/3 Stars

Housed in a white-tiled warehouse, VIK's Chaat Corner feels like a New Dehli bazaar. The restaurant is adjacent to VIK Distribution, an Indian market and import company. Long lines of Cal students and sari-draped women wait for the unbelievably inexpensive snacks--many of which are substantial enough for a meal. The food is delicious, complex, and immediate. Don't miss the dahi batata puri, crisp profiterole-like puris in a lake of yogurt, tamarind, and mint; the lamb baida roti, a soft, flat bread filled with chili-spiked lamb; or any of the weekday curries.
